We asked the Soccer Saturday pundits whether N’Golo Kante really is the Premier League’s best player after Antonio Conte claimed there is nobody better than the Frenchman.
Kante cleaned up in the individual awards last season after landing his second successive Premier League title with Chelsea, having previously led Leicester to their unthinkable success in 2015/16.
However, the Soccer Saturday panel remain unconvinced, suggesting they want to see more attacking prowess from the midfielder, who scored just his third Premier League goal in three seasons against his former club last time out.
No, I think he’s the best at what he does but I don’t think he’s like a David Silva in terms of quality. For what he does yes but I wouldn’t say he’s the best player in the league.
Silva and Kevin De Bruyne are the two I look at in terms of highest quality. Kante is absolutely box to box and if he could add some more goals he’d be priceless but they are better footballers.
For a manager, he’s great at what he does and if he went somewhere else they’d probably win the league, but Cesc Fabregas is a better player in terms of putting a ball on a sixpence.
The big test now is stepping up to that next level when he comes against better players in the Champions League.
Matt Le Tissier
You have to compare like-for-like and in his position he probably is the best. But overall I wouldn’t say he is the best player.
He obviously stakes a pretty good claim as he’s won the Premier League for the last two seasons at different clubs, but there are other players who can have a bigger impact on a game.
I’m a big fan of Sergio Aguero, who is unbelievable on his day. Eden Hazard, when he’s having one of his good seasons is right up there. I also like to watch Silva and De Bruyne.
However, from a manager’s point of view, Kante is the perfect player so I can understand, but I personally prefer players with a little bit more flair.

No, absolutely no. Not even close. For two season he’s been fantastic, absolutely fantastic. He’s a holding midfielder who is also committed to getting forward, but break down his goals and assists because that’s where the top level is.
It’s not about how many break ups or how many touches he has, it’s irrelevant when you’re talking about the top players. That’s why Mesut Ozil, Ross Barkley and Wayne Rooney get hammered when they have bad games, because they’re the ones expected to deliver.
Kante is fantastic and comes across as a fantastic guy, but if you’re a Chelsea fan looking to buy a season ticket, are you looking to watch Kante or Eden Hazard and Cesc Fabregas?
We’ve not seen him in a tough game in the Champions League and there are 10 players I’d rather buy a season ticket to see. De Bruyne with his composure, pace, manipulation of the ball, Aguero, Harry Kane, Christian Eriksen, Dele Alli, they are the players who catch my eye.
Look, he’s a very good player and he’s amazing for a player we didn’t expect anything from, but I think there has been better players this season.
Romelu Lukaku and Sadio Mane have been nothing short of sensational, Harry Kane has been fantastic and contributed a lot even when he wasn’t scoring in August.
De Bruyne has been the most influential player and has been exceptional even after having his position redefined, so I struggle to really rate him as the very best in the league.
